Holiday Break

Greetings to all of you!

I hope you are enjoying this break as much as I am. I have been using all of this time to read a few of the books that have been sitting on the shelf calling my name. I just finished a wonderful book called the Book Thief. This is an adult read, but I really enjoyed it. It was about a little girl named Leisel who had to leave her mother during World War II to live with her foster mother and father in Nazi Germany. This is a very scary time and Liesel is a brave girl who finds beauty through the power of words during such an awful time in our history.

I am now reading Gossamer by one of my favorite authors, Lois Lowry.

I already have a few of you in mind that I know would enjoy this one! I hope you are reading something wonderful too. Make sure to tell me all about it when we get back. I would love if you shared a favorite book with me or a friend. I am always on the lookout for new book "treasure"!

Remember, your homework over the break is just the reading challenge. I don't expect you to send in a reading log. I simply want you to enjoy time with your family and continue to read!

Be safe and have a happy New Year!!

Busy Mrs. Newport!

Just thought I'd send you a reminder and give you a peek into what I'm up to! Tomorrow is p.j. day!

Wrapping gifts...

And preparing for our Gingerbread celebration! What are you doing to get in the holiday spirit?

Thursday Homework

Wear your jammies tomorrow! Please remember to wear shoes so that you can go outside. You are welcome to take them off in class or even wear your slippers.

For tonight's homework students will write a book recommendation for their peers. They have done this in class before and I have included a few examples.

I know, I know I spelled recommendation wrong! I was sure it was two c's and not two m's :)

If your child dropped the homework on the way out the door they can cut a piece of paper in half and fold it like a book. They will need to draw and color a cover on the front and include the information shown in the examples belw on the inside.

Holiday Celebration on Friday + Homework

For homework tonight I want students to have an opportunity to write about what they want to.
Please encourage your child to use proper paragraph form. If the paragraphs are not indented properly I do have them fix it. Can't wait to read their creative ideas!!

Monday Homework

It is my goal to post homework here one day ahead of time.
I do my best to remind everyone to check and make sure that they have their homework journal on the way out, but now and then we still forget. If your student forgets homework at school you will still be able to find it here. I hope that this helps.

Here is tonight's homework and this week's spelling list!

You can click either picture to download and print.

The flip book stocking is just to make thing more fun and interactive! If it was lost feel free to simply write the multiples of each number. Example: The multiples of 2 are 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 etc.

Thank you for all of your hard work!

As always remember to read 20 minutes each night :)

Monday Homework: The Word Eater

We had a great first day!

For tonight's homework students are to write
2 paragraphs (3-5 sentences each) and tell what word they would have Fip eat and why. What do you think would happen? What would be the positives and negatives?

Today we began The Word Eater!
Fip is a magical worm. When Lerner Chase a young girl discovers that any word she feeds Fip causes that very thing to disappear she soon realizes that this power may be more than she ever anticipated. What if she were to have him eat the word potholes? Yes, those terrible bumps in the road would disappear but so would many jobs of the people who fix them. What if you wanted Fip to eat the word spiders and spiders were to disappear. Would the world soon be swarmed with fruit flies? Choose carefully!

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a fabulous break and enjoyed some much needed time with family!
I know we made many memories this Thanksgiving and I can't wait to share them with the class.
Come to school Monday ready to share :)

This week we will begin our Gingerbread unit.
During this time we will compare and contrast many different versions of the classic, The Gingerbread Man. Later, we will write our own versions!

Here are some of my favorites:

Visit the Gresham library to check them out. Remember, if you visit the library bring me a receipt for the books you checked out. Your visit to the library and the books you read earns you  the night with no homework!

Every two weeks I will send home a class newsletter. You will get a copy in your OWL folder, but you can always view and download from our classroom website, too. Click either picture below to download/view.

Spread the word and help fund an iPad for our classroom!

I hope you are all enjoying this long weekend with your families!
Thank you to all of the Veteran's who have served our country.
We are so blessed to live in the land of the free and home of the brave.

If you have a chance tomorrow you might consider having your child write a letter thanking a verteran for all that they have done. Take your letter to a nearby Applebees. They are serving a free meal to all verteran's tomorrow. Last year we did this as a class and even had some letter written back to us. Our words really meant a lot to the men and women.

I have created a project at Donors Choose

Through this project I hope to raise funds to add an iPad to our classroom. This technology will be a powerful addition to our classroom. This year we are going to learn about Native Americans, ocean animals, space and Earth. Those are just out thematic units! Ther iPad is going to be an amazing resource for math, reading and writing too. I can't wait to get kids making movies and typing out their final drafts!

Please help us by simply sharing the link to our project page with friends and family. Encourage them to share it with others too! Plus, for the next 7 days an anonymous donor has agreed to match any donations 100% if you use the code CHEER. I am so excited about this project. Thank you for your help!!

Click the picture below to visit our project page and start sharing. You can easily share the page to your facebook page too!

REMINDER: See you at the Gresham library on Thursday at 6:00!

Welcome

Welcome to our classroom website!

This will be a wonderful place to stay up-to-date with what is going on in room 12!

Please feel free to leave comments, download documents, and share pictures with family! If you have personal questions about your child be sure to email me privately.

This is going to be an amazing year filled with so many new and exciting opportunities!

First thing first...

I am your child's teacher, Mrs. Newport.

On Tuesday, November 12th, I hope that you will join me in some fun at the Gresham Library.
385 NW Miller Ave, Gresham, OR 97030 from 6:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m.

I am so excited to meet you and spend some time getting to know your child!
This week I spent some time playing a rounding game with the kids in small groups. They are already so much fun! Click here to download a copy of the rounding game to print and play at home.

When I share files with you I always try to make them "ink saving" with little to no color ink. I recommend skipping the cover page when printing.

You can also visit IXL.com for more rounding practice. If you need your login just send me an email.
