Double Digit Multiplication Parent Homework Help

I find that it is always helpful to know just how we are teaching specific skills at school.
We have been working on breaking apart larger numbers and using skills that we already have to multiply and find the product. I hope you find this resource helpful!

Homework: Monday January 27th

Tonight students will use their new skills for solving double digit multiplication to compare products between two expressions. They will first need to solve to find each product and then they will need to use the symbols < , > , = .

Click the images below if you need to download.

We started our 2 minute multiplication fact tests today. Several students passed their 2's and are onto their 3's. I suggested they create flashcards at home to practice. You can also purchase flashcards from the dollar tree or google search multiplication flashcards and several free versions are available. If you need help locating a set please let me know. I am happy to help!

I also sent home information about a site called Xtra math today. This site is a great electronic resource for fact practice!

Homework: Tuesday January 21st

For homework tonight we will practice identifying multiplication properties and rewriting the equation using a specific property. There is a green card in the back of your child's homework journal. We have used this green card to help us in class several times so the kids are familiar with it.

In the top section they simple list what property the two equations demonstrate.

In the second section they need to write a matching equation that demonstrates the property given.

Click here or the picture above to download. If you are unable to print you may write it neatly in your journal.

Homework: Monday January 13th

Wow we have some incredibly brilliant kids! I cannot believe how quickly they are picking up all of the multiplication properties. Keeping each of them straight is a challenge. I know that it makes my mind swirl. Tonight, we are working on the associative property. A good way to remember associative is the "hugs" property. Using the associative property we can multiply 3 or more factors in any order. The parentheses, aka the hugs can move around any set of factors and the product will not change. For example (3 x 5) x 2 is the same as 3 x (5 x 2). For homework tonight students will rewrite each problem using the associative property and then solve.

Homework: January 8th, 2014

It is important to recognize when we are not understanding what we read and "fix-up". When we fix-up we use strategies like rereading that help us. Tonight I want students to read and practice fixing up when they are not understanding. Some fix up strategies include: rereading, looking at the pictures or making a picture in your mind, replacing an unknown word with one that makes sense, reading on or inferring based on what you already know.

I look forward to hearing about your reading and seeing how you fix-up!
